One of the earliest memories I have is of standing in Graystown Castle, a Norman Keep near where I grew up. In later years, still as a child, I recited a poem for my father, that I had learned, with the lines “Ragweed and thistle now hold the Norman field…”
My friend still walks his dogs there and often gives me a ring while he’s there and we chat as he walks along.
The shape of the piece – feathering out at the top – reminds me of the fragility of the castle.
The ridges are the farming of the land, this land has been farmed for thousands of years.
The square cut-out is the garderobe of the Castle, as children we called this the “murder hole”.
